| More smartphones mean more opportunities for smartphone-related danger, be it damage, theft, or absentmindedness. Men bear the brunt of smartphone incidents, according to insurance firm Protect Your Bubble, which reported in an infographic that males are 70 percent more likely to lose their phone which attached sticker labels than females. Men are also 57 percent more likely to drop their phone into the toilet. Still, more than 40 percent of women who do wreck their phone with attached sticker labels tend to do so in the bathroom. Most men do harm to their device in the garage, Protect Your Bubble said, marking the driveway/garage as the most common place to damage a smartphone. The bathroom ranks No. 2, followed by the kitchen, bedroom, and living room, though there are no specifics about exactly what people are doing in those locations that leaves their phone broken. In terms of smartphone incidents, the owner isn't always to blame. Women are reportedly most often the victims of smartphone theft — an issue on which the New York Police Department has begun cracking down by sharing the unique ID numbers of stolen iDevices with Apple, which then tracks their locations. The stakes are even higher for Generation Y consumers, the graphic said. Those 25 to 34 years old are most likely to have their phone stolen. Meanwhile, 35- to 44-year-olds are in the majority among those who simply lose their device. Unsurprisingly, the 18-to-24 age group ranks highest among good old-fashioned phone damage, actually 16 percent more likely to crack the screen or incur liquid damage, Protect Your Bubble said. SquareTrade reported last fall that damaged iPhones which attached sticker labels have cost Americans $5.9 billion in the more than five years since Apple introduced its groundbreaking device. |
