As it is known to all, Wal-mat is the largest Chain supermarket in the world. Which one is the second? The answer is Tesco PLC which is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer headquartered in Chesnutt, Hertfordshire, England, and United Kingdom. Barcode technology and barcode labels are widely used in the supermarket. It is the second-largest retailer in the world measured by profits and third-largest retailer in the world measured by revenues. It has stores in 14 countries across Asia, Europe and North America and is the grocery market leader in the UK, Malaysia, the Republic of Ireland and Thailand. The Tesco name first appeared in 1924, after Cohen purchased a shipment of tea from T. E. Stock well and combined those initials with the first two letters of his surname, and the first Tesco store opened in 1929 in Burnt Oak, Middlesex. His business expanded rapidly, he had over 100 Tesco stores across the country with barcode labels. Originally a UK-focused grocery retailer, since the early 1990s Tesco has increasingly diversified geographically and into areas such as the retailing of books, clothing, electronics, furniture, petrol and software; financial services; telecoms and internet services; DVD rental; and music downloads. Tesco Express stores are neighborhood convenience stores averaging 2,200 square feet, stocking mainly food with an emphasis on higher-margin products alongside everyday essentials. They are found in busy city centre districts, small shopping precincts in residential areas, small towns and villages and on Tesco petrol station forecourts. Tesco Home plus is not Tesco's first non-food only venture in the UK. Until the late 1990s/early 2000s there were several non-food Tesco barcode labels around the country including Scarborough and Yates. Although not in a warehouse style format, the stores were located on high streets and shopping centers. In both cases this was because another part of the shopping centre had a Tesco Superstore that stocked food items only. |
