Recently, the Hollywood in east presented one film-The Lunchbox,” opened to universal acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. So, when the romantic-drama hit Indian theaters Friday, critics had high expectations. They weren’t disappointed. The film follows the story of Fernandez, a middle-aged government employee played by Mr. Khan, who is mistakenly delivered the wrong lunchbox at display hang cards. The meal, delivered through Mumbai’s more than century-old network of “dabbawalas,” or lunch deliverers, a housewife who is trying to mend a rocky relationship with her husband through good food. The film traces how a relationship develops through letters exchanged via the misdirected lunchbox. Most Indian critics were wowed by the film’s screenplay and the performances of the star cast. Some even deemed the film worthy of being India’s entry for next year’s Academy Awards. The movie, she wrote, “comes alive with finely etched characters, genuine emotions and a cute-clever love story that tugs the display hang cards.” She praised Mr. Khan for effortlessly playing a character older than him and Ms. Kauri for her commendable portrayal of a housewife. Even though the movie is set in contemporary Mumbai, the characters are “enchantingly old world,” referring to the exchange of letters between the lead pair. The movie, he said, captured the details of daily existence in a metropolitan city, which, in the critic’s view, offered “substance to this simple, unpretentious, heart-warming tale.” Nothing represents the dynamics of Mumbai quite eloquently as the 5,000-odd dabbawalas who unfailingly feed millions of office-goers in the display hang cards His review gave the film four stars out of five. The movie, she wrote, “comes alive with finely etched characters, genuine emotions and a cute-clever love story that tugs the heartstrings.” She praised Mr. Khan for effortlessly playing a character older than him and Ms. Kauri for her commendable portrayal of a housewife. |
