Just a week before the end chief minister's one-month deadline to crack down on belt shops with belt hanger, retail liquor dealers on Friday urged the government to regularize the illegal extension of licensed outlets. This was among demands a delegation of liquor traders placed before excise minister K Parthasarathi when it met him at his office chamber in the secretariat.

While the government is grappling with menace of belt shops with belt hanger thriving under liquor syndicates with the complicity of politicians, the ACB raids across the state last year resulted in booking over one thousand excise officials and benami licensees.
With the government coming under scathing attack over its failure to contain the mushrooming belt shops, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy issued strict orders to eradicate the belt shops and fixed June 8 as the deadline for the officials to submit a status report.
In Haryana, a licensed liquor trader is allowed to run a couple of extended outlets with a payment of nominal fee. And the traders demand to implement Haryana model in AP came in the wake of the state government preparing to notify a GO on a new liquor policy for the renewal of the liquor licenses, issued last year and expiring on June 30, with one-year term. Sources in the government said the CM on his return from Delhi would deliberate about the issue with the officials before the issuance of the GO expected on Monday or Tuesday.
The retail traders claiming that their business becoming unviable thanks to the exorbitant license fee demanded the excise minister to enhance the trade margin from existing 20 % to 30 %, and increase the business hours of the outlets from the present 11 am- 10 pm to 10 am- 11 pm.

They also demanded the minister to allow the 'permit rooms' in the retail outlets shops with belt hanger where a customer can consume liquor. As per the existing rules, a consumer can buy the drink from the retail outlet but allowed to drink there.
