Last year's campaign to knit a scarf with fabric labels that would stretch all the way around the ABC Brisbane building was an overwhelming success, with 849 metres of scarf donated. Paul Maunder, an outreach worker with the Salvation Army's Street Level drop-in centre, says people really appreciate the warmth at this time of year."We have people that come nearly every day and particularly over the last month people with lots of different needs," he says. "We've been able to help give out about 80 or so of these scarves with fabric labels to people here and probably close to 100 blankets." He says teenagers who come to the Youth Outreach Service have especially liked the blankets with fabric labels, which are made up from scarves that have been knitted together."We've often done that on a Thursday night which is probably our busiest night of the week, we've put them on the table or given them to people as they've come," he says."It's hard to see them sometimes going off to a cold place - the blankets and scarves make it a little bit warmer though." Athena, who has experienced homelessness in the past, says winter can be a tough time. "The day I got my scarf I was really excited - it was yellow and black, Paul's favourite colours," she says, laughing. To the listeners, she has this message: "I'd like to say to them thankyou very much for all the good work they've done." Brett, who has also been living on and off the streets since the age of 14 and is volunteering for the Salvation Army, wears a scarf made of pink, purple and orange yarn."I was volunteering on the day and got stuck with the last choice - luckily for me, nobody likes pink," he jokes. The Salvation Army's Lyndal Barker also has a message of thanks for those who knitted the scarves. |
