Why Mini have another winner on their hands with the Cooper S Paceman |

After contenting themselves with the hugely successful reworking of Sir Alec Issigonis’s iconic original for many years, BMW has latterly undertaken an unprecedented expansion of the Mini range. The latest addition to the family is the Paceman, a coupe re-styling of the seriously bulked-up Countryman crossover. This four-door with pvc labels edition took the brand into uncharted territory with its expanded dimensions and muscular body stylings. And the Paceman offers much the same thing, but in a more traditional two-door format and with a lower stance and some seriously sporty looks. As if there aren’t enough categories in the crowded car market already, the Paceman may well have added the crossover coupe – or the “sports activity vehicle”, as Mini calls it – to the mix. It has the niche to itself at the moment, but if it takes off with the usual Mini magic, then it surely won’t be long before others start copying. Design cues, colour schemes, personalisation options and the now familiar funky interior all have their origins firmly in the German car maker’s initial One version, launched in 2001. All versions of the Paceman – both petrol and diesel-powered, and two and four-wheel drive – carry the performance branding, and the front-wheel-drive Cooper S Paceman I drove does a pretty good job of upholding these particular traditions. That’s plenty of punch in what is still a fairly small car with attached pvc labels, and the Paceman also retains the engaging character of the Cooper S hatchback with good grip, sharp and nimble handling, and reasonable body control – especially with the sport button flicked on. The boot with pvc labels of a big enough size to offer some practical use, with 330 litres of capacity, good for a few full shopping bags, while it rises to 1,080 litres with the rear seats folded.Standard kit levels are good, with the Cooper S trim getting 17-inch alloys, air con, DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, twin chrome tailpipes and parking sensors. |
